24 crocodiles saved in Vadodara’s housing zones during Gujarat’s downpour

In all, 24 crocodiles were saved from neighborhoods in Gujarat’s Vadodara during intense rainfall from August 27 to 29, causing the Vishwamitri river, which runs through the city, to increase in water level, a forest department representative mentioned on Sunday.

The river serves as a habitat for 440 crocodiles, with numerous individuals entering homes during floods triggered by the release of water from the Ajwa dam in the Vadodara Range Forest, Forest Officer Karansinh Rajput mentioned. “In addition to the 24 crocodiles, we managed to save 75 other creatures, such as snakes, cobras, five large turtles, and a porcupine, during this time period,” he said. “There are several neighborhoods near the Vishwamitri river,” he added. “The smallest crocodile we rescued measured only two feet in length, whereas the biggest one caught on Thursday was 14 feet long, which was found in Kamnath Nagar along the river.” Rajput also reported rescuing two other crocodiles, measuring 11 feet each, on Thursday from EME Circle and an open space adjacent to the Zoology Department of MS University, following reports from local residents about the large crocodile.

Nonetheless, during this period, when much of the area and several sections of the state were experiencing intense rainfall, no clashes between crocodiles and humans were documented, he noted. “Typically, crocodiles don’t pose a threat to humans. They survive in rivers by eating fish and the corpses of other animals. Occasionally, they may even prey on dogs, pigs, or any other small creature. Recently, a video of one such interaction became incredibly popular,” the RFO reported. Given that the water levels in the Vishwamitri river have significantly decreased, the rescued crocodiles and other reptiles are slated to be reintroduced into it, he mentioned.
