Kotian makes hundred as Mumbai seal 15th Irani Cup after 27 years

Tanush Kotian’s stern unbeaten hundred contributed to Mumbai’s 15th victory in the Irani Cup. This triumph came after they had a lead over the Rest Of India in the first innings on the fifth and final day of the tournament here on Saturday.

The final time Mumbai won the Irani Cup was 27 years prior, back in the 1997-98 era. Since then, they’ve made it to eight more championship matches but have been unable to clinch the title in any of them, the latest being the 2015-16 season. Click here to get in touch with us on WhatsApp.

Mumbai commenced their final day with a start time of overnight on day 153 for six, and announced their second innings with a score of 329 for eight, maintaining a lead of 450 runs in the overall match.

Kotian, with a score of 64 in the initial innings and continuing on to play for another 20 overs, stayed not out at 114 runs from 150 deliveries, managing to hit 10 fours and a six.

With the realization that the hunt for 451 was virtually futile within a matter of time, the captain of the Rest of India team, Ruturaj Gaikwad, extended his hand to the arch-nemesis of Mumbai, Ajinkya Rahane. This gesture underscored the end of the match and the triumph of Mumbai, who were the reigning champions of the Ranji Trophy.

Kotian, demonstrating significant leadership skills to guide Mumbai’s performance following the sudden exits of Sarfaraz Khan (17) and Shardul Thakur (2), was well-backed by No. 10 Mohit Avasthi.

Mumbai were leading by 171 runs to 7 overs.
